NOSE RESHAPING (Rhinoplasty) This procedure is designed to reshape the nose to a desired size and contour. The procedure can achieve several goals. It can reduce the overall size of the nose. It can increase the size of a small nose and fill in contour defects. It can alter the shape of the tip or bridge, and it can change the angle between the nose and upper lip. A rhinoplasty is usually done for cosmetic reasons, but it is also done following trauma. The procedure is usually done under a general anesthetic. The patient wears a cast on the nose for one week and can go home the same day. There is bruising and swelling for one week and the patient can usually return to work after a week. The surgery can be performed at St. Joseph’s Health Centre or at a private clinic that specializes in cosmetic surgery. Dr. Levine performs the surgery in two ways. The first method is called an internal rhinoplasty, in which all incisions are made inside the nose. The second is an external rhinoplasty where a small incision is made just where the nose meets the upper lip. The method used depends on the deformity and the desired result. Dr. Levine meets with each patient personally for an in-depth consultation at which time the procedure is discussed in detail. The possible complications and postoperative recovery is explained. Dr. Levine makes every attempt to ensure that each patient has realistic expectations and is a good candidate for the surgery.
