MALE BREAST REDUCTION (Gynecomastia)

  Gynecomastia is a condition where a male has enlarged breasts. The cause of this condition is multi factorial. The enlargement is caused by excess fat tissue, breast tissue or both. The aim of surgery is to reduce the size of the breasts to a more natural size and contour.

  The procedure is performed using a combination of liposuction and surgical excision of breast tissue. The liposuction is done through a tiny 2-3 millimeter incision on the side of the breast. The surgical excision is done through an incision around the nipple. At times, no excision is required and the procedure is done using tumescent liposuction only. Rarely the breasts can be quite large and a more extensive incision may be required to correct the deformity.

  Depending on the extent of the surgery required, it can be performed under local or general anesthesia and the patient can go home the same day. The time off work is approximately one week. The surgery can be performed at St. Joseph’s Health Centre or at a private clinic that specializes in cosmetic surgery.

  Dr. Levine meets with each patient personally for an in-depth consultation at which time the procedure is discussed in detail. The possible complications and postoperative recovery is explained. Dr. Levine makes every attempt to ensure that each patient has realistic expectations and is a good candidate for the surgery. As each patient’s problem is unique, the surgery is customized to achieve the desired result. Alternative procedures are discussed if indicated.
