LIPOSUCTION

  The aim of liposuction is to remove localized areas of fat that are unresponsive to weight loss and exercise. The result is a more sculpted body shape. Liposuction can be used in multiple areas, including abdomen, waist, love handles, hips, buttocks, back, chest, outer and inner thighs, knees, arms and neck. There is an age limit for this procedure as the skin must have sufficient elasticity to drape back over the treated areas.

  Dr. Levine utilizes a technique known as tumescent liposuction, whereby fluid mixed with local anesthetic is injected into the fatty area. This fluid decreases the amount of bleeding and increases the amount of fat that can be aspirated. The fat is suctioned out through small caliber cannulas that are attached by tubing to a suction apparatus. All incisions are very small, roughly two to three millimeters in length.

  Depending on the extent of the area to be treated, the procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia. Patients can usually go home the same day and can expect to return to work in about one week. A pressure garment is worn on the treated areas for a month and can be removed for showering or bathing. Some swelling and bruising in the treated areas can be expected for approximately one month. The procedure can be performed at St. Joseph’s Health Centre or at a private clinic that specializes in cosmetic surgery.

  Dr. Levine sees each patient personally for an in-depth consultation. At this time the procedure is explained in detail. The possible complications and postoperative recovery are explained. Dr. Levine makes every attempt to ensure that the patient has realistic expectations and that the procedure is the right one for the patient. Since every patient’s problem is unique, the surgery is customized to achieve the best possible result. Alternative procedures will be discussed if indicated.
