ARM 'BAT WING' REDUCTION (Brachioplasty) This procedure is designed to remove excess loose skin from the upper arm. The deformity is often caused by weight loss, but aging also plays a role. An incision is made from the axilla (arm pit) and extends downwards to the elbow. The length of the incision depends on the extent of the deformity and the desired result. The excess skin and underlying fat are removed. Liposuction can be done at the same time to further contour the upper arm. For milder deformities, tumescent liposuction can be performed using very small incisions. The surgery is performed under a general anesthetic and the patient can go home the same day. The time off work is approximately one week. The surgery can be performed at St. Joseph’s Health Centre or at a private clinic that specializes in cosmetic surgery.
